Exemptions  - guidance and how to apply

Note: The following information provides general guidance about exemptions. You may find additional information about exemptions within individual programme prospectuses.

Although the University of London uses the word 'exemption', other institutions often use the term 'credit transfer'.

An exemption means that you are not required to take a particular unit as part of your degree.

To be eligible you must satisfy the University that you have already passed examinations that compare in level, content and standard to the syllabuses from which you want to be exempted. Some exemptions awarded are automatically granted; all others are considered on a non-automatic basis.

To be considered for exemption you must satisfy University criteria and make an application. Any exemption awarded is valid for a limited period only which will be specified in the decision letter sent to you. If you do not attempt an examination during this period, the exemption will expire. If you still want the exemption to count towards your degree you will need to apply again.

You may apply for exemption from up to four Foundation units but it is not possible to be exempt from subjects of the Access route.

To be eligible for exemption you must satisfy the University that you have already passed examinations that compare in level, content and standard to the syllabuses from which you want to be exempted. Some exemptions awarded are automatically granted; all others are considered on a non-automatic basis.

Automatic exemptions

There are certain qualifications for which the University will give exemption automatically.

If you have one of these qualifications, you must make an application for subjects you have previously taken and passed to be considered for exemption, although you will not have to pay an exemption application fee. If you satisfy the conditions specified, and have passed the correct subjects, you will be granted certain exemptions. The University will only be able to fully consider your exemption application after they have received the necessary documentary evidence.

Details of the automatic exemptions which can be considered are given in the prospectuses.

The following qualifications permit consideration of automatic exemptions:

BSc Degrees in Economics, Management, Finance and the Social Sciences (pdf file: 68 pages, 869 kb)

Non-automatic exemptions

BSc Accounting and Finance

If you satisfy the University's*, you may apply for exemptions on a discretionary basis from up to four foundation units.

*For example, you should only apply for exemption from the unit 80 Introduction to politics if, in your opinion, you have previously studied a similar subject in the same depth, at degree level (or the equivalent), and you have achieved good marks in the corresponding examination.

Information on the non-automatic exemptions that can be considered is given in the prospectus. (pdf file: 68 pages, 869 kb)

Non-automatic exemptions are considered on payment of a fee to the University, currently £50 per unit / £25 per half unit.

The fee is non-refundable even if the University is unable to award you any exemptions. They will only be able to fully consider your exemption application after they have received the necessary documentary evidence and fee.

Exemptionapplication

You should complete the exemption section of the Application Form when you apply for admission. Alternatively, if you have already applied for admission, write to the Admissions Office (at the Stewart House address). Your exemption application must be received at the University by 17 September if you live outside the EU and 17 October if you live within the EU.

On receipt of your initial exemption application, the University will send you one of the following:

  • a decision letter telling you that certain automatic exemptions have been awarded OR
  • a letter asking for further documentary evidence before The University can make a decision on any automatic exemptions OR
  • an Exemption Request Pack for non-automatic exemptions, including a request for the relevant fees
  • a decision letter telling you that your request has been unsuccessful.

If you are applying for non-automatic exemptions, you must follow the instructions in the Exemption Request Pack, and send the request form, fee and necessary documentary evidence to the University before they can consider your application.

After they have received your form, fee and documentary evidence, they will send you a decision as soon as possible.

Note: Unfortunately, the University cannot refund the exemption application fee, even if they are unable to give you any exemptions.

This provides an opportunity for graduates of any discipline to gain an additional undergraduate degree by following a shorter than normal programme, successfully completing nine full units rather than twelve. This can normally be achieved in a minimum of two years with the exception of the BSc Economics, BSc Economics & Finance, BSc Development & Economics and the BSc Information Systems & Management.
